Last month, I read a great New York Times piece by Sheila Heti, “Letter of Recommendation: Sick Days” and was grateful for the reminder that sometimes, being sick is necessary to get ahead. That being said, although I appreciated the article, I did the exact opposite and didn’t listen to my body when I started getting sick. I thought I could power through, but my flu blew up, which finally led me to see to the doctor, get some meds and a lot of rest, and now, I’m feeling a LOT better, so here’s to resuming my weekly small pleasures posts! As Doe Zantamata said so well, “Taking time to do nothing, often brings everything into perspective.”
Amazingly Talented and Funny Singers. After watching Adele’s Carpool Karaoke with James Corden and her posing as an Adele impersonator for BBC, I was content to know that one of my favorite singers had a wonderful sense of humor, but then she went ahead and blew my world yet again. Adele showed up on the Ellen show this past week and pranked some poor workers at Jamba Juice and it was glorious! Then, as if that wasn’t enough, Sia showed up on the Late, Late Show with James Corden in another Carpool Karaoke and proceeded to win me over with her sweet personality, powerful voice, and double-jointed awesomeness. Gifted artists with down-to-earth personalities are the best.
Multiple Instagram Log-Ins. I’m not exactly sure when the magical elves went in and made it possible to manage multiple accounts on Instagram without having to log in and out, but I am stoked about this latest update. Now, I’m able to manage my personal and the Holoholo Girls accounts with ease. It’s been a long while that I’ve managed multiple accounts on Twitter, so this is a welcome development! Thank you, Instagram!
Forest. After one of my students told me about it, I downloaded “Forest“. For those of you who don’t know about this app, it helps you to focus on the task at hand for a fixed amount of time, and discourages you from checking your phone. Set it for how ever long you’d like to concentrate and a tree is planted. If you use the phone anytime during that time, the tree dies. If you don’t, you’re rewarded and you can purchase other types of trees, OR which I prefer, you can pay for a real tree to be planted in India or Zambia. This app helps curb my compulsion to check my phone every 3 minutes which, I admit, is just downright sad, and really focus on the things that need to be done.
Finishing Homework. This past week was not a week to be slouching, even if I was sick. I’m enrolled in two Ph.D. classes this semester and this week, two papers were due. Between long naps, I still managed to bang out both papers and hand them in by the deadlines. I also finished my reading for this week and read through 2 books for my summer semester. Working full time, blogging, being a full-time doctoral student, and returning to hula in March is requiring me to get ahead of the ball and use every second of the day. It’s a challenge, but I’m up for it.
Cheese in the Trap . If you’re a k-drama person and haven’t yet watched this, you need to start. It’s from the same network responsible for my favorite drama of 2015: Twenty Again. Cheese in the Trap is based upon a webtoon, which I’ve not read, but I won’t recap since recaps are all over the web these days. What I enjoy about this drama is that it’s definitely challenging some common K-drama clichés. Episodes 13 and 14 of the 16-episode series air this week. Check it out if you have the time.
Nature Photography Challenges. My friend Maria, who posted for Holoholo Girls three years ago and will be featuring again next month, tagged me in a 7-Day Nature Photo Challenge and today marks day 3. I thought it might be difficult, but it actually came at the right time. Being mindful to notice ones surroundings helps living in the present and reminiscing on pictures taken a while ago, helps to appreciate how far you’ve come.
A New Venture. I’ve been wanting to design a line of Hawaiʻi-themed travel accessories for a long time now and after this past week, yes, with all that time on my hands (yeah, right), and after doing some market research, I’ve decided to just jump in. Wish me luck on this new adventure!
What made you happy this week? Here are a few other small pleasures that made people’s weeks and as always, thanks to Mani for this awesome writing challenge.
